Music Commissions

As a part of the “Lift Every Voice” concert on April 1-2, Voce is delighted to be performing a new commission by Roland Carter, in collaboration with the Chorus America Commission Consortium, that will honor the life of Congressman John Lewis.


Voce has earned a national reputation for our commitment to regularly commissioning new works by internationally recognized composers. Voce has also presented national and regional premieres of new choral works.

Voce premiered its most recent commission, "Alchemy" by composer Karen P. Thomas, online on April 25, 2021, and in person on December 18 and 19, 2021, in Vienna. This piece was made possible by a Commission Consortium (of which Voce is a participant), sponsored by Chorus America.

Voce premiered a setting of e.e. cummings's "in the rain" by composer Stephen Caracciolo, on April 15 and 17, 2016 in Reston and Vienna. This commission was made possible by the generous support of the Winter-Skerritt Family and will be featured on Voce's new CD (late 2016).

Voce premiered "i love you much (most beautiful darling)" by award-winning composer Matthew Harris and based on the poem by e.e. cummings on March 23 & 24, 2013 in Herndon and Reston, Virginia. This commission was made possible by the generous support of the Winter Skerritt family.

On December 15, 2007, Voce premiered its commission, Magnificat, We Sing by renowned composer and arranger, Alice Parker. It was funded in part by the Arts Council of Fairfax County.

On May 11, 2007, Voce performed the concert premiere of the complete set of Shakespeare Songs by Matthew Harris (Books I-V) as part of the Kennedy's Center's Shakespeare in Washington festival and was funded in part by the Arts Council of Fairfax County. Voce commissioned Shakespeare Songs Book VI and premiered it in May, 2009.

On June 5, 2004, Voce performed the regional premiere of the entire cycle of composer Paul Basler's not-fully published Cantos Alegres.

On April 14, 2000, Voce performed the U.S. premiere of José María Vitier's Misa Cubana in Arlington, Virginia.

Voce's commission, Three Rossetti Lyrics by Daniel Gawthrop, was performed on Saturday, May 22, 1999 and supported by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Voce commissioned William Hawley's Alleluia, Dies Sanctificatus and performed it for the first time on December 17, 1996.

On March 20, 1994, Voce premiered Neither Spirit Nor Bird by internationally known composer and arranger Alice Parker.

Voce's first commission, Sing Me to Heaven by Daniel Gawthrop, was performed by Voce on Feb 4, 1991 and quickly became a choral music best-seller.
