The fortunes of English music and musicians have ebbed and flowed through the centuries, but the
Tudor period was an undisputed “golden age” for music in the “scepter’d isle.” The craft, ingenuity,
and sonority of Tudor music was at once utterly unique and indelibly “English,” and native composers
of the last century have frequently drawn inspiration from this rich legacy. This all a cappella program
pairs two iconic works of twentieth-century English music, Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Mass in G Minor
and Herbert Howells’s Requiem, as well as music of William Harris and Bob Chilcott, with works by
three leading composers of the Tudor age—Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, and Orlando Gibbons. Set
against this backdrop, one can hear how these later composers incorporated and reinterpreted the
rich soundscape of Tudor polyphony for a second “Elizabethan” age.
